The Boy Hiding in Some Men

Predators seek out vulnerability, feed on weakness, and find gratification in dominating the helpless. If found guilty of his crimes, Jerry Sandusky will spend the remaining days of his demented life as the vulnerable, weak, and dominated victim –  a man buried  deep within the confines of the Pennsylvania state penal system.  It is impossible to feel any sorrow for Sandusky, the situation in which he has placed himself, or his anticipated misery in a different kind of shower room ecstasy.

But in reality; young boys were not the only ones in which Sandusky found vulnerability , weakness, and the ability to dominate.  He realized the same traits in the Penn State University Administration, Athletic Department, and in his former boss – the iconic Joe Paterno.  This collection of guardians for the “Penn State Way” were quick to show their hand – a vulnerability in their willingness to protect “the program and the man”- at any cost.  Their inability to stand up to the monster, and expose the cancer which had attached its self to the underbelly of  the heralded program allowed this predator to fed on the weakness of their intentional silence and secret shame.  The monster grew in strength, realizing that he could and would control their actions – and their inactions.  He would dominate and eventually humiliate each of these stoic figures.  The same men who had denied him the birthright for which he was previously destined – the Paterno Throne and Keys to the Kingdom of Happy Valley.

Then just like a self destructing Lucifer set on destroying mankind and the God’s Garden, Sanduskystruck out to destroy the Paridise of his tormentors and the bounty which it bestowed.  This monster probably attained his ultimate pleasure in taking this collection of distinguished academic and community leaders, along with his iconic former boss to the shower room and exerting his power and domination over them.  He owned them and they knew it.  So today, they are humiliated and ridiculed in the court of public opinion – the luster gone, the hallowed image forever tarnished.  With his arrogant and deviant behavior on the grounds of the university,Sandusky faunted his dominance over these weakened men and sneered at their inability to respond to his perverted acts on the very grounds which they revered.

It’s easy to find the boy hiding in some men – even an eighty-five year old man.  Weak men do desperate things.  They scurry to keep their secrets under the cover of darkness, and then exposed beg for forgiveness and understanding.  Their regret isn’t in their cowardly failures; but in their disclosure as men who are truly – vulnerable, weak, and dominated by the one which they fear could and would destroy them, if they failed to obey.
